Every set moves through the same life. It launches in print and widely available near MSRP. Supply is deep, so prices stay flat or even dip. Then production ends and the set goes out of print. Fresh supply stops, opening continues, and the float begins to shrink. As boxes get scarcer, price separates from MSRP and climbs. Years later the set is genuinely rare, and price is set almost entirely by how little sealed supply survives.
Knowing which stage a set is in tells you what to expect. Buying deep in-print supply is a patience play. Buying just after a set goes out of print, with supply visibly tightening, is often the sweet spot. Buying a mature, thin-float set is buying proven scarcity at a proven premium.

The direction that matters more than the level. A set with steadily draining supply is healthier than one sitting flat, even at a similar price.
